Obedience, hmm not a very exciting word is it, especially as an adult. But it truly depends on who we are obedient to- doesn’t it?
People who follow the Lord’s teachings are called Jesus followers-they have a heartfelt desire to follow the teachings in the bible. We may come to this life choice as a result of some excruciating disappointment in life that caused us to turn to God, or we may come to this life choice as a result of reading Scripture. Spending time reading the bible allows the Holy Spirit to teach us that life following Jesus is the only stable, peace-filled, protected life there is. So no matter how we became a Jesus follower, the result is that we have stepped off the “tight rope” of life without a net and we now have heavenly guidance and protection.
“The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”(Ps 121:7-8)
Knowing Scripture, memorizing it and meditating on promises like this one from the Lord, allows us to claim the words we have read. We can say “Lord, you said in Psalm 121 that you would protect me from harm and I am claiming that promise as I walk in obedience to you, putting you on the pedestal of my life.
Many times we can look at obedience as a lack of freedom, but obedience to God is protection- it’s smart.
Think of a driver in a car without a GPS system, map or cell phone. That person is free to drive where ever they desire, yet they can only drive to places that they are familiar with, otherwise they’ll get lost and have to backtrack- wasting time and money. They may even come to an unknown danger and be involved in an accident causing pain or even death.
If however, the driver has a GPS system and trusts it and is obedient to it’s leading, that person can go all over the world, including overseas if they dock at a port and load their vehicle on a car barge!
God is our compass or GPS system and it is smart to trust Him even if we don’t know the way He is leading us or it feels very uncomfortable at times.
Obedience is smart. There will be no backtracking when following the Lord’s instructions and He will protect us from the unknown. Obedience to God will also take us to places that we couldn’t get to on our own with our own skill or motivation. Not only that, life runs more smoothly and blessings are abundant on the path of obedience.
The best advice from Scripture that we can take is to let go of the control of our life and hand it over to the Lord. Pray before making any major decision and don’t move (so to speak) until you receive the answer to your question while studying the bible diligently daily.
When we seek God and His direction with all of our heart, we will find Him.
“Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you search for me with your whole heart.” (Jeremiah 29:12-13)
