Hello,
I would bet there comes a time in everyone’s life when we wonder if there is more to life than getting through the day, working, solving the daily problems and perhaps being lucky enough to enjoy some of the nicer things in life like dinners out, get togethers with family and friends and vacations.
Before we choose to know and understand the Lord, it may seem that the work and problems of life far outweigh the enjoyment of life- BUT, this is not how God intended it! God sent His son Jesus to die on the cross so that we who believe in Him can live a full and abundant life through the help of the Holy Spirit. We start to understand how this all works once we decide to seriously study the Bible.
Reading the Bible opens up our mind to the fact that there is much more to life than what we see. We were all made for a purpose and that purpose is to expose the mighty power of our Lord Jesus Christ. If we are relying only on ourselves to work hard and figure out all we need to know to get through this life, how will anyone see the Lord’s power at work in our life? If on the other hand, we live life in submission to the Lord’s teachings, we can show the world how God assists us and provides for us.
For instance, if we are in our twenties and would like to be married, we can date with the moral standards the Lord describes in the Bible allowing Him to make the choice for us. God will then see our submission to Him and bring a spouse into our life in His timing and he/she will be the perfect partner for us. Choosing to follow God will always be the best path with a solid future, because the Lord stated:
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”(Matt 7:24-27)
This means that although we will encounter problems, if we have built our marriage on the rock of Jesus Christ, we will endure everything and we will thrive. So as hard as it sounds, we must give up our ideas of life and hand our entire life over to the Lord if we want what is best for us and what will give us the most peace, contentment and joy.
God created us, He knows us better than we know ourselves and therefore handing our life over to Him should be done with joyful anticipation of what He has planned for us! Our life should be looked at like a surprise party- we know that a surprise is coming because we gave the Lord the “go ahead” to lead us and make choices for us, but we don’t yet, know what the magnitude of this hand off will bring into our lives.
“If you cling to your life you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.”(Matt 10:39)
When we give up our life for the Lord we will start to see that it is easier to live like God intended for us- because the Holy Spirit is helping us do the right thing. The Fruit of the Spirit will become evident in our life and these include:
“…love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and self control…”(Gal 5:22)
On the other hand, if we are living by your own choices we will see these qualities in our life:
“….immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing….(Gal 5:19-21)
Living like this excludes us from inheriting the things of God’s kingdom. These things include protection, rewards, blessings, and the 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit listed above. This means that joy and peace will allude us- we may have it one day but not the next. God is telling us that we cannot have sustained enjoyment in this world as well as conquer all of our human qualities that end up bringing us pain- unless we turn our lives over to Him.
Living life without Him is impossible- we are on the path to death. Living life with and for the Lord means that we are on the path of abundant living and we will have a peace in our soul that transcends our circumstances.
Food For Thought,
Lisa
