Post 56 Our Lies Can Harm Innocent People

Hello,

Today I want to talk about lying.  Not the white lie “yes I love that beef stew” (even though I’m a vegetarian) type of lie.  I’m talking about the full out lie that if anyone found out, your life would not be what it is today.  These are the lies we tell people to cover up real sin in our lives.  The Bible has something to say about lying…take a look:

“Now there was a famine in the land; so Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land. It came about when he came near to Egypt that he said to Sarai his wife…please say that you are my sister so that it may go well with me because of you, and that I may live on account of you.” (Gen 12:10,13)

Abram was placing trust in his lie so that his life would go well for him- instead of trusting in God. Lying always leads to negative consequences. Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, believed that Sarai was Abram’s sister and not his wife, therefore she was taken into Pharaoh’s house. Soon thereafter, Pharaoh’s house was struck with many plagues as a result of a married woman living within the four walls of his home. God never wants us to bear false witness for another. The 9th Commandment states “Thou shalt not bear false witness.” Lying is an abomination to the Lord, as noted in Proverbs 16:16-19)

There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him;

Haughty eyes,

A lying tongue

Hands that shed innocent blood,

A heart that devises wicked schemes,

Feet that are quick to rush into evil,

A false witness who pours out lies,

And a person who stirs up conflict in the community

Pharoah was not aware that he was doing anything wrong until bad things started happening to him and his house. He later figured out why, and remedied the situation by removing Sari from his house.

We must remember however that Scripture tells us in the book of Job that not all bad things that happen are a result of sin, so we should not judge others. Also, Psalm 44 explains that at times we suffer for Christ’s sake, to be tested. This will show our continued obedience in the face of affliction. However, when undesirable things do happen, it is best to go to the Lord through prayer and ask God if you have done anything to cause your undesirable situation. If you are sincere in your request, God will make it very clear if you are sinning.

Not knowing the ways of the Lord and moving through life using only your knowledge is unwise. Your lack of prayer, reading Scripture and confiding in Christian friends to help guide you, will not only negatively affect you (eventually), but also those residing within your in your home. This is especially important for parents.  Keeping sin secret by lying will eventually end in chaos, stress, shattered families and starting over. This will majorly disrupt families and I don’t think we need a psychology degree to realize that children count on their parents to keep the family unit constant, predictable and safe. They need these things so that they can develop properly. Shattered homes = shatters lives.

Go to God with all of your problems in life.  Read scripture to gain knowledge and peace in order to get through the rough years of your life instead of taking matters into your own hands, trying to escape the pain of life through sin.  There is no other way, unless of course you want to destroy your life and start over again, which uproots children from the stability they have relied upon. Not to mention starting over is never easy or cheap.

When the pain of life comes, and it comes to all, please don’t complicate your life by falling into sin and the lures of the devil.  Take your pain to God and learn from Him.

“Come to me all who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matt 11:28-30)

We are all on this journey of life together so let’s take our eyes off of ourselves and find someone this week to encourage- it may be just what they needed.

All my best,

Lisa
