Post 54 God Opposes Pride And Self Reliance

Hello,

This post may be difficult for those out there who are used to working hard and providing for themselves and their family devoid of a relationship with our Lord.  Hard work is a good thing, even scripture supports that notion.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” (Col 3:23 NIV).

A relationship with the Lord will provide us with everything that is truly important. If we focus on what we can obtain from this world as our sole conquest in life, we may come to a point where the Lord takes it away so that we learn that we never needed it for our happiness. All true contentment and joy comes from the Lord alone.

“Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.”(Job 1:21 NIV)

There is an example in the Bible of how the Lord was frustrated with the fact that His people were becoming self reliant. The Israelites were vast in number and within this crowd there were people with varying talents.  These talents, combined with their intellects could allow them to create amazing cities in which to live.  Take a look…

“Now the whole earth used the same language and the same words. They said, come let us build for ourselves a city and a tower whose top will reach into heaven and let us make for ourselves a name. The Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of man had built. The Lord said, behold, they are one people and they all have the same language. And this is what they began doing and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them…let Us go down there and confuse their language so they will not understand one another’s speech…from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city…therefore its name was called Babel.” (Gen 11:2,4,6,7,8,9)

God is the source of all of our talents and everything good. When we live life as if everything relies on ourselves we become prideful- worse yet, arrogant if we succeed. God wants us to rely on Him. (Phil 4:13) If God only allowed those who are connected, wealthy or brilliant to be the only creative minds in this world, most of us would feel as if we are second-class and have no hope to make a real impact on this world. But this is not true! God’s power is made perfect in weakness.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.(2 Cor 12:9)

We can do so much more than our human intellect allows us, when we combine forces with our Creator. He knows the future, He can inspire us in a dream, through Scripture, through the words of others, in nature etc. He can orchestrate the design and the outcome will be awe-inspiring.  Bring God into your plans, this will ensure that what you have created, will remain and better yet, bring Him glory. (Matt 7:24-29)

Our ultimate purpose on this earth is to CHOOSE to live our lives in obedience to God so that we are a conduit of His ideas, power, healing, love, blessings and every good thing. Our lives should point others to our Creator.

Have a wonderful week!
