Post 48 Our Purpose

Hello,

When I first started reading the Word of God 16 years ago, my  friends and I were having a Biblical discussion.  One of the ladies told me that our purpose in life was to give glory to God.  I was dumbfounded as to what that meant. All of this Bible jargon was new to me, baffling but intriguing as well.  I went home that night and opened my Bible once again, to study it. I knew that if I kept close to God through His Word, He would eventually impart this wisdom to me -and He did just that.

To give God glory we have to give God something.  We can give God our time and attention by reading the Bible and applying the teachings. If we give God our tithe (10% of our income) He can multiply it.  Read any of the books by David Green CEO of Hobby Lobby stores for an excellent example of how God keeps increasing the store profits due to the Green’s faithful and ever increasing tithe percentage.

An excellent story of God revealing His glory was the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand people in biblical times. The little boy gave Jesus his lunch, Take a look…

“When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up,  “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there).  Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.”  So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”(John 6: 5-14NIV)

This is how our Lord works. He wants us to trust Him.  If you give Him something that you feel that you are lacking, you are showing your trust in Him as your provider and this enables God to display His glory.  God can’t perform miraculous signs in your life unless you give Him SOMETHING to start with!

Are you lacking in time?  Give Him some of your time -set aside 30 minutes to read the Bible, and ask Him to open your heart to it’s message.  What does God do when you give Him some of your time?  He can give you focus, energy and good breaks that help you accomplish your tasks more efficiently. Then you are freed up to help others which glorifies God.

Jesus took the boy’s lunch and held it up to the sky to thank the Lord for this provision.  This is also very important.  Thanking God for what you have right now, gives glory to God. You are acknowledging where your provision came from. Even if we are at the lowest place in our lives, we still have something we can give to God, it’s called the sacrifice of praise.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (Phil 4:6 ESV)

Back to the story…The Lord blessed the boy’s lunch and then Jesus started passing the fish and bread around. Everyone took some,  ate their fill and the food never ran out!  In fact, there were 12 baskets of food left over!  God is a God of abundance.  Give Him what you have, trust Him and He will make sure you are not only taken care of, but you have enough to  share with others!

“Give and it will be given to you. A good measure pressed down shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be given unto you.” (Luke 6:48NIV)

Notice the words “running over” in this verse.  God is never in debt to anyone, ever! If you give to Him, He makes sure you are provided for – not only with the amount you shared- but with an abundance. If you “measure” out of what you have, God will “measure” out of what He has and God has unlimited resources!

Jesus was given the opportunity to demonstrate His power (His glory) because that little boy gave Him his lunch.  Allow God to demonstrate His power in your life by being one of His followers. Read His Word, then apply what you have learned.  If you do this you are giving God the ability to show His glory in your life and like that little boy who gave Jesus his lunch, you will be amazed at what God does with it!

“I have come so that they have life and have it in abundance.” (John 10:10)

“God is the same yesterday, today, forever.”(Heb 13:8 KJV)
