Miracles happen in the operating room-I should know, I work in them. This is a great story of one young man’s miracle.
Being a nurse anesthetist, I feel that I’m at a unique advantage to see the power of God and the power of prayer because I work in the operating room, a place where minutes count. So when things start to go south, I can see the power of my prayer right before my very eyes. I am going to share an amazing story about the power of prayer. It took place years ago in a surgical case I was not involved in. I was told of the miracle in the operating room after it unfolded, and this is how it went down.
A neurosurgeon was working on the brain of a teenager, trying to evacuate a hematoma that developed after a car accident. A hematoma is just a fancy word for “bruise” or collection of blood, that was pressing on an area of this young man’s brain. Several hours into the surgery the surgeon ran into a bleeder that he could not stop. The surgeon worked for more than 45 minutes to try to get this “bleeder” to stop but it was impossible. Finally after he exhausted every angle he knew, as well as calling in help from another surgeon, he stepped away from the operating table and asked the whole surgical team in the room to start praying. He told the team that he had tried everything he was trained to do and it was not working. He then said that it was up to God now. The surgeon walked away from the OR table, leaned his back up against the operating room wall and slid down to the floor. He hung his head and started to silently pray. He sat there for more than ten minutes!!! Ten minutes is an eternity in a bleeding patient, an eternity! This shows the surgeon’s solid belief that no one could help this young patient except God. No one! When you get to a point like this in your life, it gets God’s attention. God blesses the spiritually aggressive.
“For the eyes of the LORD move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His.” (2 Chron 16:9a)
Here are a few survival prayers found in the psalms:
“Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Psalm 124:8
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in time of trouble.” Psalm 46:1
“Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior.” Psalm 38:22
After his time in prayer, the surgeon tore off his gown, re-scrubbed his hands re-gowned and gloved and walked up to the young man’s open brain. The bleeding had stopped!! The whole team cheered so loudly because that surgeon believed that miracles can happen in the operating room! They finished up the surgery and the young man was stable in the intensive care unit and recovered fully.
Wow! The power of prayer! All it takes is a little faith. Do you have a little faith? What are the “bleeders” in your life that could be cured if only you trusted in our heavenly Father?
God’s Promise:
“And Jesus told them, I tell you the truth, If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say unto this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible to you.” (Matt 17:20 NIV)
