Hello,
There are many well- meaning religious people who go to their denominational churches regularly, believe that Jesus died for our sins, and try to be good people. This seems to be the extent of their faith. The denominations actually have put a name on these people- they call them “good Catholics” or whatever the religion is.
The Evangelical churches on the other hand, have congregants that also believe Jesus died for our sins and therefore these congregants will spend eternity in heaven as well. The difference is that the Evangelicals don’t rely on being a “good person” because they know we can never be good enough to earn anything from the Lord. The Evangelicals trust and rely on the finished work of Christ on the cross. It was God’s power that raised Jesus from the dead and it is the Holy Spirit power that can raise us from our dead existence. This world offers us temporary solutions, Jesus offers contentment despite any situation we have to face. It is contentment based a a person- Jesus Christ- not contentment based on our ability to solve our own problems.
This is the shift in thinking needs to occur in order to live powerfully as a born again Christian. Those who are born again have stepped out of life here on earth and all the striving to enjoy life and make it worth living and instead have given God the go ahead to run their life. There is no striving simply reading the Bible and learning to follow what we are being taught.
We know that as a follower, God will never let us encounter anything outside of His will, and if it is God’s will, we will eventually come out of our issues and problems victorious and stronger in our faith.
” Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”(Joshua 1:8)
We have the free will to exercise our freedom in Christ or not. Think of Adam and Eve. They lived in paradise with the Lord. They had free will to do things their own way or heed the words of God. When they didn’t heed the words of the Lord they were removed from God’s presence- which means they were no longer provided for and protected. Therefore they had to work harder to eek out a living and worst of all, they encountered more pain.
We have the same choice. We can acknowledge Jesus and His work on the cross, and then go about living life in a manner we think is right, trying to be a “good person.” Or we can know that we will never be good enough to earn anything of worth from the Lord and therefore choose to submit to His Lordship and do as He instructs with the help of the Holy Spirit. If we do this we are considered children of God and privy to all the blessings of the good life- namely peace, contentment, power to overcome problems, illnesses and addictions.
“Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.”(Luke 10:19)
This is where the Bible is necessary.
14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”
(Romans 8:13-17 NIV)
