Post 212 Track Your Time = Know Your Priorities

Today I’d like to talk to you about the most valuable asset- time.

Many of us say that our family is first and most precious to us and yet if we look at our day planner, every hour of the working day is filled up with a “to do” list of things that have nothing to do with caring for and being present for our family.

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”(John 13:34-35)

We must read this verse in it’s fullness. This doesn’t simply mean to love people in the world, this verse means to love our families too. If Christians do not prioritize our family to the extent that we stand out in this secular world, we are not living out this verse.  We could reinterpret this verse to say “How will the world know you are mine if you act like everyone else- God.”

Human beings are selfish. We want it all and I’m speaking from experience. We want the nice career and the salary that goes with it. We want children that are polite and obedient to us. We want friends to go out with and vacation with and we want a well run home. These things  (except our children) aren’t important to the Lord. The Lord says to us:

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”(Matt 6:33)

The Lord Jesus Christ sacrificed His life in order to do the things His Father wanted Him to do. He laid down His life.

We as Christians are asked to do the same. We must look at our schedules and pray to the Lord, asking Him if we are living out this directive from Him. If we are not, we can always change- it is never too late. God always helps those who sincerely choose to live like Him.

Doing “things” is fun. Gaining “things” is fun. But God is trying to protect us from unforeseen negative events down the road by not living as He instructs. We need to live in faith. God will not explain every detail to us so that we can consider whether or not His reasoning is enough to have us follow His ways. Later, however, we will see the fruit of His teaching and our obedience. We will have healthy relationships. We will have more than enough resources to live on -and our love and trust for the Lord will be even greater because we have understood why He lead us as He did.

“Trust in the Lord with all of your heart. Lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your path straight.”(Prov 3:5-6)
