Post 189 The Enneagram- Not For Christians

A personality tool called the enneagram, got it’s start from a mystical form of Islam and thus it is not for Christians.

The man who invented the enneagram was a 19th century esoteric named George Gurdijieff. He learned this craft from followers of  mysticism.

Then a man named Claudia Naranjo says he came up with the 9 personality types by way of automatic writing.

A  quick search on the Web shows me that over one million people have taken the enneagram personality test in the last 30 days.  There are far too many people trying to make sense of who they are without looking to the Lord to answer their questions. Who is better to help us understand ourselves than our Creator?

Christians are taught in the very first book of the Bible that we are made in the image of God

“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”(Genesis 1:27)

All people are made in the image of God. We can be sure that our God given traits do not include the characteristics listed in the personalities types of the enneagram namely: image conscious, temperamental, possessive, secretive, anxious, suspicious, scattered, distractible, confrontational, and complacent.

God tells us who He made us to be. There is nothing in the bible stating we are to take personality traits such as those listed in the enneagram and categorize ourselves. Why would God want us to focus on sinful qualities we learned from the evil influence of Satan?

Our Christian duty- after we give our lives to Christ- is to listen to the Holy Spirit and step by step, degree by degree turn away from old habits and evolve into our “new man.”  This is the sanctification process God desires for all people.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”(2 Cor 5:17)

The enneagram is not for Christians and it’s not a benign tool. We can place the enneagram in  the same category as horoscopes, ouiji boards, dream catchers and meditating or affirming anything other than the Word of God. These are occult and New Age practices and have no place in a Christian’s life.

“Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.”(Matt 22:29)

There is no tool, system or book written by a secular person that will clarify our God given personalities.  The best use of our time is to study the Holy Bible. When we do this with a sincere heart we are given understanding from God Himself.

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”(Jer 29:13)

God is the answer to all of our questions. We must be wise and push away secular personality tools that overshadow the work of the Lord. God is not finished with anyone yet. He will gently mold and sculpt all people until our last breath. When we place our focus on the good changes we see in our personality from the  gentle guidance of God, we realize that the enneagram and it’s focus on the negative- is not for Christians.

” Long before he laid down earth’s foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ…” (the message paraphrase of Ephesians 1:3-5)
