Hello,
Today I’d like to use an analogy to describe how we break the heart of God.
I think it’s safe to say that all young children aren’t happy when their parents say “no” to them for any reason. Some of these children may get so frustrated with their parents rules, that they decide to run away. They surmise that freedom to live on their own terms will make them happier than living under mom and dad’s rule -and so they pack their little bag, backpack or suitcase and say goodbye to their parents and walk towards their version of freedom. This little adventure will last until the child experiences pain that could be resolved if they went home.
The parents are of course, heartbroken by this act of rebellion from their beloved child. How could their son/daughter walk away- don’t they realize that they are loved? Don’t they realize how much mom and dad have done for them? Don’t they realize that their rules are to keep the child safe and prevent pain in the future?
Deep in their heart they understand that the child is simply rebelling against authority and desiring to do everything without restriction- yet the pain is real.
This is how the Lord must feel when we rebel against His teachings and boundaries by making choices that are opposed to Him.
“This is what the Lord says:“The children I raised and cared for have rebelled against me…My people don’t recognize my care for them… Oh, what a sinful nation they are—loaded down with a burden of guilt. They are evil people, corrupt children who have rejected the Lord. They have despised the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him. Why do you continue to invite punishment? Must you rebel forever?(Isaiah 1:2,3b,4-5)
We rationalize our behavior-What harm could this cause?“I’m an adult,” we say to ourselves, “I can make up my own mind and if a terrible consequence happens because of my choice, I will deal with it then.”
The problem is that all rebellion against the Lord is considered sin and ALL sin leads to a hastened death.
Let me explain…
God put His laws in our heart,
“I will put My laws in their minds and inscribe them on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be My people. No longer will each one teach his neighbor or his brother saying, Know the Lord, because they will all know Me from the least of them to the greatest.”Hebrews 8:10-11)
So we need to listen to our conscience, aka the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will let us know when we are doing something outside the will of God and if we continue in our sin, ignoring the Holy Spirit, it won’t end well. If we do not repent, deciding instead to fully engage in our desires, we will be removed from the protected life that Jesus followers enjoy and we will miss out on the good things He promises His faithful followers.
If we turn to the Lord and agree with His ways and become determined to follow His guidance, we will have the blessings of His Kingdom. In the Kingdom of Jesus followers, we are privy to everything the Lord can do for us- heal us, provide for us and move mountains out of the way for us- everything! It requires obedience and full faith and this is why many believers never enter the Kingdom of God here on earth. They will go to Kingdom of heaven because they believe in the Lord, but they won’t enter the protected life here on earth.
Those who “see” Him now, with their spiritual eyes, and make their life goal to walk in His ways, receive His benefits now and will receive every single blessing He has promised us in His Word.
We will never be destitute(Deut 8:18), we will be healed by the stripes of Jesus (Isaiah 53:5), His blessings will be on our food and water and He will take away any disease(Ex 23:25), we will be blessed in the city and the country, our children will be blessed, our baskets will be overflowing and we will be the head and not the tail. (Deut 28), this is the abundant life the Lord promises to us. (John 10:10)
“He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also, along with Him, freely give us all things?”(Romans 8:32)
God sees all of us as the young child with the suitcase in hand walking away from Him. And like the good and loving parent, God will never let us get away without attempting to pull us back. At first it is with nudgings to our conscience and if that doesn’t work His ways will get a little stronger, culminating in pain. The point is not discipline per se, it’s to pull us to the only one who can give us real freedom and fill that empty space in our heart.
It takes humility on our part to give our adult choices and our whole life to the Lord Jesus Christ. But we have to remember that we are trusting God, our all loving heavenly Father who will never lead us astray.
I encourage you to join me in the daily walk of dying to self and instead choose Christ. We will NEVER be perfect, but everyday is a new day to follow the Holy Spirit’s nudgings.
Food For Thought,
Lisa
