Hello,
How many readers have asked for a sign from God?
My hand is raised too. I have asked for many signs in my life and I’m not embarassed to admit it. If we look at Scripture, we will find that there is a famous story of a man named Giddeon who asked for not one, but two signs on the same subject. After he had asked for a sign one night and received an answer from the Lord, he asked again the next night and received confirmation from the Lord.
Why did the Lord inspire Samuel the writer of the book of Judges- to include the story of Giddeon in his narrative? I think in part, to show us that we can ask for signs too- if we truly desire to know God’s will in order to follow it.(see Samuel chapters 6-8)
There is another story in the book of Isaiah, where the Lord himself encouraged King Ahaz to ask for a sign. The king refused, citing that he didn’t want to test the Lord.
Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, “Ask the Lord your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.” But Ahaz said, I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.”(Isaiah 7:10-12)
Ahaz was not being kind. He had contempt and disregard for God and didn’t want to know God’s power or understand His lordship. Matthew Henry’s commentary on this verse states that “Secret disaffection to God is often disguised as respect to Him.”
Listen, if God tells one person to ask for a sign, it is A-OK for others to ask as well. The only requirement is that we should truly desire to know God’s will and truly desire to follow God’s will once it is revealed. If those requirements are met, then ask away.
Many times when we are new Christians, I have seen in my circle, that God will perform signs and miracles as a way to exhibit His power and to show that He has heard our prayers. Later, when we have been Christians for awhile, He lets us dig deeper into His Holy Book to find the answers. He doesn’t want us to be “fast food Christians.” Why? Because He desires a relationship with us and a relationship takes time.
We need to sit in the presence of the Lord by reading His words daily. He is trying to speak to us through the history of the Bible. The Bible stories and wisdom will show us how to live our best lives, free of worry and full of hope. I find that spending time daily reading the Bible is the best use of my time. I hope you find this to be true too!
Have a wonderful week!
Lisa
